Admiral Andreas 'Vokos' Miaoulis,

The Greek national hero was born in 1769 in Negropont, Euboea, Greece and died on June 24, 1835 in Athens. Within his lifetime Miaoulis helped end the Ottoman Empire near 400 year rule over Greece and bring stability to a country that had long forgotten its proud history.

He was a true patriot who victoriously commanded the Greek Navy during the Greek War of Independence. Before the war of independence started in 1821 Miaoulis was already a rich man; he had amassed a considerable fortune from wheat-shipping during the Napoleonic Wars. Being the man he was he spent almost all of his wealth on the struggle for Greek independence. In 1822 he was given command of the Greek naval forces and in the years to follow he fought the Turkish fleet in many engagements in and around the Aegean sea.

Miaoulis went on to be involved in the Greek Civil war that followed the Turks being ousted from Greece, despite this before his death in 1835 Miaoulis saw freedom in his own land; a dream he spent much of his life fighting for.

On this site you will soon be able to read about the history of Miaoulis and his involvement in the Greek war of Independence in much more detail. In time the site will grow to include the legacy of Admiral Miaoulis by including the family tree of descendents that are still alive and proud to be related to Andreas Miaoulis.
